Gastric Band Procedure
The Adjustable Gastric Band System induces weight loss by reducing the capacity of the stomach, which restricts the amount of food that can be consumed.
Minimally Invasive Approach
During the procedure, the surgeon usually uses laparoscopic techniques (using small incisions and long-shafted instruments rather than a large incision), to implant an inflatable silicone band into the patient's abdomen. Like a wristwatch, the band is fastened around the upper stomach to create a new, tiny stomach pouch that limits and controls the amount of food you eat. It also creates a small outlet that slows the emptying process into the stomach and the intestines. As a result, patients experience an earlier sensation of fullness and are satisfied with smaller amounts of food. In turn, this results in weight loss.
Least Traumatic Procedure
Since there is no cutting, stapling or stomach rerouting involved, it is considered the least
traumatic of all weight loss surgeries. The laparoscopic approach to the surgery also offers the advantages of reduced post-operative pain, shortened hospital stay and quicker recovery. If for any reason the Gastric Band System needs to be
removed, the stomach generally returns to its original form.
Adjustable Treatment To modify the size of the band, its inner surface can be inflated or deflated with saline solution. The band is connected by tubing to a reservoir, which is placed well under the skin during surgery. After the operation, the
surgeon can control the amount of saline in the band by entering the reservoir with a fine needle through the skin.
The
diameter of the band is adjustable to meet your individual needs, which can change as you lose weight. For example, patients who aren't experiencing significant weight loss can have their bands tightened, or pregnant patients can have the band
expanded.
Is it the right treatment for you?
The Gastric Band System is not right for everyone. You and your surgeon should work together to decide if this is the right treatment for you. Here are some of the things your surgeon will consider.
The Gastric Band System may be right for you if:
1. You are an adult (at least 18 years old). 2. You have been receiving treatment for obesity 3. You have conditions that may improve with weight loss such as high blood pressure, diabetes, sleep apnoea or arthritis 4. You have
tried all other appropriate non-surgical treatments to lose weight but have not been able to lose weight or maintain weight loss 5. There are no specific medical or psychological reasons why you should not have this type of surgery and
generally fit enough to have an anaesthetic and surgery 6. You are prepared to make major changes in your eating habits and lifestyle. 7. You are willing to continue working with the specialist who is treating you.
8. You do not drink alcohol in excess.
Your surgeon may have other criteria he will use in your particular case.
Your motivation is key
Your surgeon will not do the operation unless he knows you understand the problems your excess weight is causing. Also, your surgeon will make sure you know you have responsibilities. These include new eating patterns and a new lifestyle. If you are ready to take an active part in reducing your weight, your surgeon will consider the treatment. First, though, your surgeon will want to make sure you know about the advantages, disadvantages, and risks involved.
Risks, complications, and adverse events you need to know about
All surgical procedures have risks. When you decide on a procedure, you should know what the risks are. Talk with your surgeon in detail about all the risks and complications that might arise. Then you will have the information you need to make a decision.
How much weight will I lose?
Weight-loss results vary from patient to patient, and the amount of weight you lose depends on several things. The band needs to be in the right position, and you need to be committed to your new lifestyle and eating habits. Obesity surgery is not a miracle cure, and the pounds won't come off by themselves. It is very important to set achievable weight-loss goals from the beginning. A weight loss of 2 to 3 pounds a week in the first year after the operation is possible, but a smaller weight loss is more likely. Twelve to eighteen months after the operation, weekly weight loss is usually less. Remember that you should lose weight gradually. Losing weight too quickly creates a health risk and can lead to a number of problems. The main goal is to have weight loss that prevents, improves, or resolves health problems connected with severe obesity.
Will I feel hungry or deprived?
The Gastric Band makes you eat less and satisfies your hunger in two ways - first by reducing the capacity of your stomach and second by increasing the time it takes food to get through the digestive system. After a small meal, the amount of which varies from person to person, you should feel full. If you follow the nutrition guidelines when you choose your food and then chew it well, you should not feel hungry or deprived. Remember that the Gastric Band is a tool to help you change your eating habits.
Do I need any pre-operative tests?
As a minimum you will require a blood analysis and ECG. Patients over 150kg also require a lung function test. These tests can be carried out in Cyprus, but some patients prefer to arrange the tests in the UK to ensure that they are likely to be a suitable candidate for surgery before making travel arrangements.
How long do I need to stay in Cyprus?
Most patients are recommended to stay in Cyprus for 7-14 nights (the surgeon will advise at your initial consultation in your particular case), which includes your stay in the clinic (normally overnight) and ensures that you are close to the clinic and your surgeon for your primary post-operative care and can relax and recuperate before returning home.
After you return home
Your surgeon visits the UK regularly, he will recommend a schedule of post-operative consultations in your particular case. You will also have his telephone number to contact him should you have any worries or concerns between consultations.
