Ear Correction
Ear Correction (Otoplasty) is a procedure used to reduce
large or protruding ears by setting the ears back closer to the head as well as moulding, shaping and/or removing cartilage.Otoplasty can be performed at any age after the ears have reached (or nearly reached) their full size - which is around
5 to 6 years of age. Otoplasty can dramatically change a person's appearance simply by making protruding ears look more normal. Often the problem is caused by an undeveloped middle fold of the ear. Otoplasty can reshape the ears, reduce
their size, make them more symmetrical, and/or position them closer to the head. If you are self-conscious about your ears, and always keep them covered with your hair, then this surgery can open up new possibilities for changing your
appearance and your body image. In most cases, otoplasty will leave a faint scar in the back of the ear that will fade with time. Even when only one ear appears to protrude, surgery is usually performed on both ears for a better
balance.
Planning your surgery……….
Otoplasty is a very
individualised procedure. At your initial consultation, the surgeon will discuss your goals for the surgery. He will discuss your medical history and will check for medical conditions that could cause problems during or after surgery. He will
explain the techniques and anaesthesia and any risks involved, and will answer any questions you may have, especially those regarding your expectations and concerns about the results. Otoplasty is usually be performed under local
anaesthesia, combined with a sedative to make you drowsy. The surgeon will discuss the alternatives with you. For surgery in Cyprus, you need to stay for a minimum of 7 days, which gives time for your recovery and primary post-operative care
before returning home.
Getting back to normal……..
There isn't usually
significant discomfort after surgery and you should be up and about in a day, but plan on taking it easy at first. Your surgeon will give you more specific guidelines for gradually resuming your normal activities but above all, get plenty of
rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing. Most patients can resume work about a week after surgery. To return to procedures page, or go to another page, click the navigation buttons on the left.
